CAN METFORMIN CAUSE WEIGHT LOSS?

BENEFITS , RISKS AND EVIDENCE

Metformin can cause modest weight loss but primarily it is not a drug for weight loss management it is an antidiabetic medication prescribed for type 2 diabetic patients. Research and studies suggest that metformin may cause modest weight reduction or BMI but that weight loss depends or varies from person to person. This article is all about the mechanism of how metformin is involved in weight reduction, its side effects and benefits and what recent research and studies findings about metformin weight loss property.

WHAT IS METFORMIN

Metformin is a prescription antidiabetic medication which helps to reduce or control high blood glucose levels which is caused by type 2 diabetes. It is also be given to person who are at high risk of having type 2 diabetes. [1]

Type 2 diabetes is a health problem in which the body is not able to generate enough insulin, or the quantity of insulin produced by pancreas is not able to transport blood sugar levels inside the blood cells where it is used to generate energy. Consistently elevated blood sugar levels may damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves and cardiovascular system.[1]

The function of metformin alone or if taken with other antidiabetic agents helps and  reduces high blood glucose levels and  also improves insulin sensitivity . Controlling  high blood glucose  levels also controls complications related to kidney damage, nerve issues, blindness, cardiovascular disease and sexual dysfunction. Along with regular exercise and healthy eating will improve the function of metformin.[1]

CAN METFORMIN CAUSE WEIGHT LOSS

Studies suggest  that the use of metformin, an antidiabetic drug for controlling weight loss is still unclear. However research shows that the use of metformin may cause modest weight loss in some people. Yet the amount of weight loss can vary from one person to another and also metformin is not mainly used in weight loss management.[2,5]

Studies also show that the use of drugs is also seen to reduce weight in some people that is why metformin may be prescribed in obese people to reduce the risk of having type 2 diabetes.

HOW DOES METFORMIN PROMOTE WEIGHT LOSS

According to a new study in mice and human by Stanford Medicine researchers in 2024 they discovered that the antidiabetic drug Metformin promote moderate weight loss by

  • Increase in lac-phe molecule levels in cells, mice and human study groups. It is an anti-hunger molecule produced after vigorous exercise .The finding suggests that Lac-Phe may contribute to metformin’s effects on food intake and body weight.
  • Metformin works by lowering blood sugar by decreasing the amount of glucose which is produced by the liver and also improves the body’s sensitivity to insulin improving cells to use glucose more effectively. Due to this some people may experience:
  1. A slight reduction in appetite
  2. Reduced sudden changes in blood glucose levels

As a result people eat smaller portions without having strict food restrictions.[4]

IS METFORMIN APPROVED FOR WEIGHT LOSS BY FDA

Metformin is not approved by FDA primarily for weight loss management, its prescribed mainly to treat type 2 diabetic patients. [1]

Although  weight loss can occur in some people. The exact mechanism of action of metformin which can lead to weight loss is not fully understood. However along with other antidiabetic medications metformin is generally not associated with weight gain.

DOES METFORMIN CAUSE WEIGHT LOSS WITHOUT DIABETES

Clinical evidence suggests that metformin supports weight loss in adults with obesity regardless of whether they have type 2 diabetes. The weight loss related to metformin is generally modest , also it is not a powerful weight loss medicine. Still high quality research is needed.[3]

A 2024 meta analysis and systemic review of 49 randomized controlled trials found that metformin may cause modest weight loss in BMI in adults with obesity who do not have diabetes. In comparison with placebo metformin reduced BMI in average of 0.56 kg/m2

The researchers also noted that the studies varied in their methods and many of the trials were of low quality. [5]

Therefore metformin is not considered as the first line of treatment for weight loss management as it is not a powerful weight loss drug its effects on the body weight is much smaller as compared to drugs that are developed and  approved for weight loss reduction treatment.

DOES METFORMIN CAUSE WEIGHT LOSS WITH PCOS

  • PCOS stands for  polycystic ovary syndrome . It is a complex metabolic condition affecting around 20% of women.
  •  Conditions in which women become less responsive to insulin where the body’s cells make it harder to regulate blood sugar levels.
  • In this situation body starts making more insulin to normalize normal blood glucose levels
  • Abnormal increase levels of insulin trigger the ovaries to produce higher levels of androgen which affect ovulation that leads to the symptoms like irregular menstrual cycle, excessive hair growth and acne
  • Use of metformin helps improve insulin sensitivity, also reduces the amount of glucose the liver releases into the blood .

Is weight loss common with metformin ?

The effectiveness of metformin for treating obesity has been investigated in a small number of clinical trials and the findings have been inconsistent.

How much weight can someone expect to lose on metformin?

  • The amount of weight loss with metformin varies from person to person it is not the same for everyone.A 2024 systematic review of 49 clinical trials found that metformin was associated with a modest reduction in BMI compared with placebo, with an average reduction of 0.56 kg/m². [4]

SIDE EFFECTS OF METFORMIN

Metformin can cause side effects , particularly during the early stages of the treatment.Commonly reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite , stomach or abdominal discomfort and changes in taste. These side effects may decrease as the body adjusts to the medicine.[1]

The commonly reported side effects of Metformin includes:

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Metallic taste in the mouth

These side effects typically get improved as your body adjusts to metformin .

FAQ

Is metformin used for weight loss like ozempic?

Both medications use different mechanisms of action in lowering blood glucose levels and promote weight loss.

  • Metformin is an oral medicine taken once or twice a day used to control blood glucose in type 2 diabetes whereas Ozempic ( semaglutide) is an injectable medicine once a week shot and it belongs to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class.[6]
  • Metformin improves the body’s sensitivity to inulin and lowers the amount of glucose that livers makes and it can be associated with modest weight loss in some people  while ozempic has been associated with greater weight loss in clinical studies when used for weight management depending on specific dose and indication . However the primary indication for ozempic is treatment of type 2 diabetes although ozempic doses and products for weight management are different.

Neither medicines should be used for weight loss management without first consulting a health care professional.

Does metformin cause weight loss without diabetes?

Although metformin primarily is not a weight loss medicine but it may cause modest weight loss in some adults who are over weight and are non diabetic. [5]

How much weight can you lose with metformin?

The amount of weight loss with metformin varies from person to person; it is not the same for everyone. [5]

How long metformin does metformin take to lose weight?

The amount of weight loss and the time taken for the weight loss may vary from person to person. However if weight loss occurs  it usually occurs gradually rather than fast.

Does metformin reduce belly fat?

Metformin may reduce weight in some people but it is not specifically used to reduce belly fat.

Can you take metformin just for weight loss?

Metformin is not approved primarily as a weight loss management drug. For weight loss management it should be discussed with the health care professional for an individual depending on their condition.

CONCLUSION

Metformin  is not primarily a drug for weight reduction; it can cause modest weight loss in some people including those adults that do not have type 2 diabetes but they are overweight. However the amount of weight reduction is different in different individuals.

Scientists are still on their research for finding out metformin effect on the appetite and weight reduction including the role of Lac-Phe. [4]

Before considering metformin for weight management one should consider a health care professional for its benefits , effects and side effects.
